The Student Conservation Association is seeking a Regional Youth Programs Manager in Oakland, CA.
This position will plan, organize, deliver and oversee SCA environmental conservation youth/teen programs in the California/Southwest/Hawaii region of SCA – particularly urban programs in the Bay Area. This role will recruit and place youth and young adults in a variety of programs each year; work with partner organizations to plan service projects and work crews; hire, train and supervise crew leaders and other staff as needed; implement safety protocols; maintain all related documents/files; complete program evaluations and reporting; manage budgets.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of job-related experience or 5 or more years of relevant experience.
- 2+ years of experience working with youth and young adults; a specific focus of working with urban youth from low-income backgrounds, preferred.
- 2+ years of program coordination along with experience in environmental/outdoor program leadership or environmental education
- Demonstrated supervisory and program budget knowledge needed
- Demonstrated skill and experience in developing curriculum as well as evaluation tools
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to develop and maintain relationships needed
- Knowledge and experience of Microsoft office
- Must have access to cell phone for business purposes
- Bay Area resident or significant knowledge of area strongly preferred
- Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification required or willing to obtain upon hire
- Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required; ability to drive 8-passenger vans and other vehicles as required
- Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
Essential Functions:
• Recruit, interview, and assist in hiring and/or placing both volunteer and paid youth/young adults for both school-year and summer SCA programs and internships.
• Hire and supervise seasonal staff, including crew leaders (adults) and apprentice crew leader apprentices (youth), and also year round staff (Program Coordinators & Program Assistants)
• Plan and deliver staff training for crew leaders and youth, both for local and national trainings.
• Work closely with students/youth and crew leaders to develop, coordinate and lead youth in regular, ongoing outdoor recreation, environmental education and community service activities.
• Track expenses according to budgets; oversee event and program logistics, evaluation, and reporting.
• Establish and maintain relationships with agency, nonprofit, and municipal partners in the region.
• Order and maintain camping gear, supplies, tools, equipment, and uniforms (inventory, purchase and fix gear and equipment and assure safe and orderly storage).
• Purchase/procure food for program-related camping trips, special events and meetings.
• Drive for work-related errands and activities, including transporting leaders, members, and volunteers.
• Ensure safety protocols for all members and staff. Field emergency/non-emergency calls during business and non-business hours.
• Facilitate a strong teamwork environment with programs team and with other SCA departments.
