Classroom Sustainability Associate (Job # CSA1) – Intern/Hourly Intermittent

The Position
The Classroom Sustainability Associates provide opportunities for teachers and students to directly contribute to the
sustainability of their school and community by providing in-class teacher training and instructional support for student
action projects that enable 4th and 5th grade public school classrooms throughout Alameda County to contribute to the
sustainability of their school and community. Students are engaged in sustainability issues though an educational
approach which includes: an introduction of environmental principles, student-led environmental audits of school and
home resource use, activities for student action to reduce the school’s environmental footprint, outreach and education by
students to the larger community, and reflection on and celebration of progress and achievements. For more information

The position(s) receive day-to-day direction from a Program Specialist, oversight from a Program Manager and reports to
work at the StopWaste.Org agency office in Oakland CA. Candidate must be willing to travel to multiple school sites
throughout Alameda County.
Selected candidate(s) for the position must be able to provide own means of transportation and may have access to City
Care Share for the purpose of traveling to and from various school sites located in Alameda County.
This position is a Monday thru Thursday position, including some Friday and scheduled weekends classes and events.

Example of Duties
Student Action Project instructional support and in-class Teacher Training
 Facilitate, teach independently and co-teach classroom presentations which include: demonstrations of
sustainability principles and methods of environmental education instruction, classroom instruction with a variety
of hands-on lessons which may include setting up; maintaining and harvesting a worm composting bin;
conducting classroom and school-wide waste audits; providing age-appropriate examples of reduce, reuse,
recycle, and compost for students.
 Facilitate hands-on activities and student-led action projects that encourage the adoption of sustainable behaviors
at school and at home by exploring a variety of environmental pathways including household hazardous waste,
food scrap recycling, Bay-Friendly gardening and other waste reduction topics.
 Assist with classroom set-up and clean-up including preparing participating classrooms, lesson props and visuals,
and pre-and post- lesson materials for teachers.
 Order, compile, maintain and distribute classroom materials and kits.
 Assist with Teacher Trainings and other school events.
 Conduct information gathering and research to update classroom curriculum as needed to ensure accuracy and
quality of program.
 Assist with marketing of Student Action Project which includes: visiting schools; preparing mailings; and
communicating with teachers.
 Provide activities that engage families in sustainable behaviors through school site and community events based
on availability.
 Assist with program development and classroom evaluation process and other tasks as needed.
Classroom Sustainability Technical Assistance
 Assist classrooms with Green Star School registration and calculating sustainability measures at school and at
home using sustainability calculators.
 Assist with providing technical assistance to teachers and providing ongoing maintenance strategies for classroom
worm bins and demonstration bins and recycling systems.
 Assist with action project teacher training workshops.
 Assist with other tasks, programs and events related to the irecycle@school program as needed.
Administrative
 Assist with teacher registration process including registering and confirming presentations, assembling teacher
confirmation packets, copying handouts, compiling program materials, and communicating with teachers or
schools by phone, fax or email.
 Enter registrations, evaluation data and other pertinent information into schools database, online evaluation
survey, and other logs or spreadsheets.
 Document and report school case studies, quarterly and end-of-year final report.
 Track and document work hours, mileage to and from schools and programmatic expenses incurred.
 Participate in regular meetings and debriefing Agency staff regarding Student Action Project and administrative
functions connected to the program.
 Provide regular communication with administrators, teachers and parents through in-person meetings, telephone
and emails.
 Coordinate with transfer station fieldtrip staff and assist with other tasks related to the irecycle@ school
Education Center fieldtrip program in San Leandro and Fremont as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of education and/or experience in teaching environmental content to students (primarily elementary grades) in
formal and non-formal education setting. Knowledge of the integrated waste management hierarchy and the concepts of
reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost and/or other sustainability issues.
ABILITY
Ability to organize thoughts and effectively communicate both orally and in writing; be self-directed; manage personal
time and be punctual; prioritize tasks; exhibit willingness to learn new skills; communicate and participate in a team
setting; lift 50 pounds; work in an outdoor setting where there are loud sounds, dust, and various weather conditions.
SKILLS
Proven ability to work in a team setting and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues,
partners, and the public and provide quality customer service. Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets,
database entry, e-mail and Internet research.
EDUCATION /TRAINING
Any combination of experience and education that would demonstrate possession of the required knowledge and abilities
for the position: a typical way to obtain this knowledge would be a bachelor's degree with college course work in
education, environmental education, environmental science or related field or experience providing environmental
education or working with school age students. Training in classroom management tools and techniques.
Desirable Qualifications
Familiarity with communities in Alameda County, familiarity with current waste management and sustainability issues
and practices, ability to speak and write in Spanish or experience working with elementary school English Language
Learners.
Hours and Rate of Pay
Start Date: Positions are available starting September 12th, 2011.
End date: June 15th, 2012
Pay: $25.00 per hour
Hours: between 20-30 hours per week, average 30 hrs. per week -- up to 1,000 hours during the 2011-12 fiscal year
ending June 30, 2012. May occasionally include late afternoon, Saturdays, and evening hours; these would be scheduled
in advance.

Job Description
The Position
The Environmental Education Associate (reference job number EEA1) assists in the operation of the irecycle@school
Education Center field trips for 4th grade and high school classes located at the Davis Street Transfer Station and Fremont
Transfer Station. The position receives day-to-day direction from the Education Center coordinator and/or program manager
and reports to work at the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro, CA, operated by Waste Management Inc. and in
addition, the Fremont Transfer Station in Fremont, CA, operated by BLT Enterprises. The program is overseen by a program
manager located at the StopWaste.Org offices at 1537 Webster St in Oakland.

Example of Duties
School Field Trip Instruction and Program Support
• Conduct field trips for 4th graders which includes: using principles and methods of environmental education
instruction; ensuring that teachers, chaperones and students know and follow safety rules; maintaining
appropriate classroom decorum; instructing the 4Rs, reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost with students; assisting
with hands-on activities; following a developed curriculum and script.
• Conduct middle school, high school, and after-school field trips with multi-level K-12 groups, on evenings and
weekends, as needed.
• Assist with field trip registration and scheduling including: confirming buses, assembling teacher confirmation
packets, copying handouts and acquiring brochures, and communicating with teachers or schools.
• Assist with field trip set-up and clean-up including: preparing Education Center, activity props, safety equipment, and
pre-and post-field trip materials for teachers.
• Conduct information gathering and field trip curriculum updating as needed to ensure accuracy and quality of
program.
• Participate as needed in debriefing Agency staff regarding Education Center program and administrative functions
connected to the Education Center program.
• Assist with marketing of field trips which includes: visiting schools throughout the county, preparing mailings and
communicating with teachers.
• Assist with ongoing maintenance of on-site worm bins, Biostack compost bin and Bay- Friendly garden as needed.
Other irecycle@school School Programs Duties
• Assist with irecycle@school classroom presentations and administrative functions as needed.
• Assist with irecycle@school outreach as needed.
• Assist with teacher training workshops.
• Assist with other tasks, programs and events related to the irecycle@school program as needed.
• Participate in irecycle@school professional development training as scheduled.
Administrative
• Assist with entering evaluation data into database, and other information into appropriate logs or spreadsheets.
• Track and document work hours.
• Answer telephone and take messages as needed.
• Assist with other tasks related to the irecycle@school program and classroom presentations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Second interviews will be held August 22-23, 2011.
Hours: Between 20-30 hours per week, (up to 1,000 hours). May occasionally include late afternoon (for After School
tours), Saturdays, and evening hours; these would be scheduled in advance.
Typical Schedule:
Monday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Tuesday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Wednesday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Thursday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Bay Localize, an Oakland-based nonprofit dedicated to environmental sustainability and social justice, seeks a motivated and organized Office Management Intern. This is a great opportunity to gain experience with how a office functions, and to use your organizational skills to make a positive difference in the world! This position is out of Bay Localize’s office in downtown Oakland. This internship includes a $300/month expense reimbursement and requires 10 hours/week, be determined by the applicant and Bay Localize.

This position is supervised by the Program Director. Primary responsibilities include:

Process forms such as check requests, check deposits, and others as needed.
Enter data into Salesforce contact database.
Participate in and take notes at meetings, type, and distribute to team members.
Maintain smooth functioning of office administrative systems.
Organizing filing systems.
Procure office supplies as needed.
Represent Bay Localize on phone and in person at events.
Assist with additional administrative and outreach tasks as needed.
Qualifications:

Quick learner who is comfortable taking responsibility for tasks with minimal supervision.
Available 10 hours/week for a minimum of 3 months.
Intermediate computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and databases.
Responsible, very organized, and detail-oriented.
Good written and verbal communication and people skills, in person and on the phone.
Quick learner who is interested in learning about community resilience, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
