The Student Conservation Association is seeking a Regional Youth Programs Manager in Oakland, CA.

This position will plan, organize, deliver and oversee SCA environmental conservation youth/teen programs in the California/Southwest/Hawaii region of SCA – particularly urban programs in the Bay Area. This role will recruit and place youth and young adults in a variety of programs each year; work with partner organizations to plan service projects and work crews; hire, train and supervise crew leaders and other staff as needed; implement safety protocols; maintain all related documents/files; complete program evaluations and reporting; manage budgets. 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of job-related experience or 5 or more years of relevant experience. 
  • 2+ years of experience working with youth and young adults; a specific focus of working with urban youth from low-income backgrounds, preferred.
  • 2+ years of program coordination along with experience in environmental/outdoor program leadership or environmental education
  • Demonstrated supervisory and program budget knowledge needed
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in developing curriculum as well as evaluation tools

Essential Functions:
• Recruit, interview, and assist in hiring and/or placing both volunteer and paid youth/young adults for both school-year and summer SCA programs and internships.
• Hire and supervise seasonal staff, including crew leaders (adults) and apprentice crew leader apprentices (youth), and also year round staff (Program Coordinators & Program Assistants)
• Plan and deliver staff training for crew leaders and youth, both for local and national trainings.
• Work closely with students/youth and crew leaders to develop, coordinate and lead youth in regular, ongoing outdoor recreation, environmental education and community service activities.
• Track expenses according to budgets; oversee event and program logistics, evaluation, and reporting.
• Establish and maintain relationships with agency, nonprofit, and municipal partners in the region.
• Order and maintain camping gear, supplies, tools, equipment, and uniforms (inventory, purchase and fix gear and equipment and assure safe and orderly storage).
• Purchase/procure food for program-related camping trips, special events and meetings.
• Drive for work-related errands and activities, including transporting leaders, members, and volunteers.
• Ensure safety protocols for all members and staff. Field emergency/non-emergency calls during business and non-business hours.
• Facilitate a strong teamwork environment with programs team and with other SCA departments.

ORGANIZATION: Urban Habitat POSITION: Transportation Justice Coordinator APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 7th, 2014 THE OPPORTUNITY Urban Habitat seeks a transportation justice advocate with a social/environmental justice focus to advance regional equity through policy advocacy and lead/support other priority transportation/environmental justice and equitable development campaigns throughout the region. THE ORGANIZATION Founded in 1989, Urban Habitat has advanced regional equity in the Bay Area by changing transportation investments, increasing housing options and advocating for healthy and thriving built environments. We achieve our mission through public policy advocacy, developing advocate leaders as decision makers, building coalitions and coordinating/supporting campaigns to advance environmental, economic and social justice in the Bay Area. POSITION SUMMARY The TRANSPORTATION JUSTICE (TJ) Program Coordinator works closely with the Transportation Justice and Land Use staff, Strategic Initiatives team and UH Leadership to define and implement campaigns, policy advocacy, research, and coalition building. A major focus of this work is watch dogging regional transportation policy, planning, decision-making, funding and investments. The TJ Coordinator will help monitor the Civil Rights policies of transit operators. The position will support movement building in the Regional Equity, Transportation Justice & Environmental Justice sectors. The TJ Coordinator will work to bridge UH’s TJ program work with our equitable development and anti-displacement, housing, climate, and public health work. The Coordinator will work closely with UH’s partners to ensure that low-income communities and communities of color benefit from the implementation of key transportation, land use and climate policies at the local, regional, and state level. Example policy targets may include the Sustainable Communities Strategy of the Regional Transportation Plan, Local transportation funding measures and key statewide legislation including AB 32 and SB 375. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The candidate must be a strong strategic/analytical (campaign and program level) thinker, excellent communicator and have the ability to generate and equalize knowledge between complex ideas (transportation planning, funding, decision-making) and grassroots campaigns. The candidate must be able to conduct research that supports concrete campaign recommendations and policy recommendations as well as experience in providing relevant policy analysis of TJ and Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Candidate must be able to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including grassroots community based organizations, policy advocates, environmental organizations, government, labor, and public health organizations. Coordinator should be familiar with regional transportation policy, planning (and ideally Land Use planning), decision-making, funding and from a social equity perspective. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Staff the Transportation Justice Working Group and support Regional Equity Initiatives such as the 6 Wins for Social Equity. • Support the creation and development of UH’s short and long-term Transportation Justice policy agenda and strategy at the regional and local levels. This includes working with community based local TJ campaigns/coalitions on transit funding measures. • Strengthen development of UH’s analysis of the relationship between public investment in transportation and market driven housing as well as support a rethinking of UH’s Equitable TOD framework • Support Land Use & Housing program site based planning work as needed. • Monitor the political landscape for strategic opportunities to advance UH’s priority campaigns and programs. Research and analyze local, regional, state and, national policies that are relevant to UH’s Transportation Justice goals; design innovative policies and advocacy strategies that build on UH’s existing expertise and relationships. • Mobilize policymakers, community and labor allies, and other key stakeholders around UH’s Transportation Justice policy agenda and strategies. • Support UH’s efforts through regional equity forums & convenings to educate and mobilize members on key Transportation Justice issues including land use, equitable development, climate, housing, transportation, jobs and health. • Strengthen UH’s written regional equity analysis and framework on Transportation Justice issues including equitable development, climate, housing, land use, jobs and health. Support UH’s efforts to produce original reports and analysis that contribute to the environmental justice movement. Provide data, analysis and articles for UH’s website and other UH publications. • Represent UH on Transportation Justice/Equitable TOD issues at conferences, community events, workshops, and other public/media engagements. • Provide policy analysis for and recommendations to UH leadership, staff and board about key campaign, policy advocacy and legislative opportunities at the local, state and national level. • Lead review and re-development, working with UH’s Strategic initiatives team, of UH TJ and Equitable Development curriculum and training resources. QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree in urban planning, urban studies, environmental studies, economics, public policy, or equivalent experience such as policy director for planning, housing or transportation organization. • Knowledge and experience working on regional transportation policy, planning (and ideally Land Use planning and Climate), decision-making, funding and history from a social equity perspective • Capacity to utilize a wide array of research methods, including but not limited to: Internet, public information requests, government reports, telephone inquiries, quantitative analysis relevant to transportation, GIS and key informant interviews. • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate policy analysis and research results, including development of conclusions and persuasive arguments for individuals outside the organization, as appropriate; bilingual or multi-lingual a plus. • Demonstrated experience developing and leading successful policy campaigns and/or programs focused on environmental, social, and/or economic justice. Capacity to evaluate and prioritize campaign opportunities to ensure that they maximize Urban Habitat’s overall campaign and organizational goals. • General knowledge of the Bay Area as a region with specific knowledge of sub-regions and priority communities a plus. This position does require extensive interactions with community-based organizations throughout the region. Position: Director of Communications and Marketing Reports to: Executive Director Revised: February 14, 2014 AGENCY OVERVIEW Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) - Building on its 40-year history, MEDA is advancing innovative approaches to asset development. Its efforts are focused on serving low-income, Spanish-speaking San Franciscans. Our direct service programs serve 6,000 individuals each year through homeownership counseling and foreclosure intervention, business development, digital literacy, workforce development, financial education and free tax preparation. We also devote resources to research and evaluation, community organizing and advocacy. In the process, MEDA is helping to develop best practices in the field. In December 2012, MEDA was awarded a 5-year, $30 million implementation grant from the Department of Education to implement the Mission Promise Neighborhood, a neighborhood-based effort to improve education and create family economic stability for in the Mission District through a cradle- to college- to career continuum of services. This initiative involves 26 community based organization partners, as well as City of San Francisco government agencies, the San Francisco Unified School District, and the Mayor’s Office of San Francisco as close collaborators in the implementation effort. MEDA is the lead agency, fiscal agent and project manager for the Mission Promise Neighborhood. POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications and Marketing will be responsible for translating the organization’s overall mission into strategic communications that support agency goals and programs. The Director of Communications and Marketing will handle the development, management, direction, and administration of policies and programs related to social marketing, brand enhancement, public relations and media affairs for the organization. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategy Development & Implementation • Plan and implement the organization’s marketing and communications strategy and vision, including tactics to reach specific audiences, messaging, budgeting and production of collateral • Create and implement marketing & communications plans for MEDA and the Mission Promise Neighborhood initiative with the goal of raising visibility and maximizing community involvement • Mentor and manage a team consisting of a Media Communications Specialist, Graphics and Design Specialist and various contractors in delivering both proactive and responsive communications to support agency goals and programs • Coordinate closely with the Senior Management Team at MEDA, program, policy and fundraising staff to ensure marketing and communications strategy is aligned with and supporting MEDA’s organizational goals • Engage Executives and key stakeholders with content development, practices and reporting • Develop a crisis communications strategy, including rollout and execution of the strategy as needed. • Evaluate, select and supervise outside agencies and vendors; including design agencies, advertising agencies, freelance writers, videographers and print/production vendors • Support community engagement efforts through the production of community-oriented marketing and engagement events, media appearances, collateral distribution and other methods, working closely with program staff Materials Production • Coordinate the production of quality bilingual marketing materials with consistent branding and graphic presentation, including newsletters, brochures, annual report, etc. • Write speeches, articles, and columns for publication, press release, media advisories, and other materials • Responsible for the development of the organization’s strategic branding, messaging and community outreach strategies • Create innovative approaches to deliver MEDA’s messages, impact and outcomes through materials design and distribution • Enhance MEDA’s visibility, image, and influence in the areas of asset building and community economic development • Represent MEDA at appropriate meetings as requested to raise the visibility of MEDA in the community • Lead the generation of online content that engages audience segments and leads to measureable action Social & Online Media • Supervise web design and maintenance with webmaster and marketing/communications staff for MEDA and Mission Promise Neighborhood sites and ensure that new, consistent and engaging information (article links, stories and events) is created regularly • Develop and manage a social media engagement model and best practices toolkit; train and coach contributors and internal team on social media tools and techniques. • Create and distribute through various online media channels compelling success stories of MEDA and Mission Promise Neighborhood clients, the community, and the organization • Supervise Media Communications Specialist and create strategy to maximize the use of MEDA’s social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Twitter, and other platforms. Ensure content is engaging, updated regularly and accurately reflective of the organization’s values, goals and activities • Supervise production of MEDA blog, ensuring relevant, engaging and compelling content is created and distributed through a variety of media channels, enhancing and building MEDA’s online media presence Contact Management, News Media, Other • Implement centralized contact management strategy through Salesforce and other platforms to ensure information is regularly delivered to MEDA’s various contacts (media, funders, partners, clients, individual donors, etc.) • Train MEDA staff and partners as needed on communications issues, such as storytelling, interacting with the press, and other topics • Write and develop compelling speeches and talking points for MEDA’s Executive team and other staff as needed • Create and implement news media strategy to maximize coverage of MEDA in both Spanish and English media • Serve as main point of contact for all media relations at MEDA and coordinate staff involvement with reporters • Monitor coverage of MEDA through various media sites, and produce reports and analysis on coverage and impact for Management Team and board QUALIFICATIONS • Proven success as marketing/communications leader and brand ambassador for a dynamic, fast paced organization • High energy leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels • 10+ years’ experience in leading marketing and communications in either a national non-profit organization with a strong record of marketing and branding success, or in a corporate environment • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or Communications, Business or a related field. We are a multifaceted organization combining direct legal services, policy advocacy, communications and impact litigation strategies. Description of Position: The Community Engagement Coordinator will serve as a critical team member for an LCCR pilot project, Cultivating Fair Chance Employment in Alameda County. The goal of the project is to help build within the business community, and particularly the small business community, a commitment to reducing recidivism and expanding economic opportunity for formerly incarcerated people. Drawing on national models and lessons learned through LCCR’s current work, the project will directly engage the employer community as a means of influencing the overarching economic environment in which formerly incarcerated people are struggling to succeed. This movement-building work will lay a foundation for positioning reentry and recidivism as issues in which all Alameda County community members, and businesses in particular, have a stake. Duration, Hours, and Compensation: The Community Engagement Coordinator position is a temporary, part-time position for up to a one-year term. The current Coordinator position is made available by a grant awarded to LCCR. The position is contingent upon the continuity of the project and availability of the grant funds. It is anticipated that the Coordinator position will require approximately 15-25 hours per week depending upon the work allocation during the relevant grant period. The rate of compensation for this position is $20-22 per hour. General Summary of Work Performed: The Community Engagement Coordinator will help lead and support engagement of the Alameda County business community on reentry issues. The Coordinator will assist in the development of the program, liaise directly with community contacts, coordinate program logistics, and support the development of a public education and media campaign. Overview of Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Assist in the design of a series of events to engage the business community in reentry issues. 2. Conduct outreach and recruit participants for event series. 3. Coordinate logistics and assist in implementation for event series. 4.
