I am writing to let you know about a unique and exciting new program for youth and opportunities for employment in Richmond, CA.

The National Park Service will initiate a new part-time youth crew program located at Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historic Park (NHP) in Richmond, CA, begining August 2008. Six high school age girls will have the opportunity to receive paid experience in community outreach, media arts, and education under the supervision of a crew leader and a coordinator employed by the Student Conservation Association, a national organization that has led youth programs devoted to public lands stewardship since 1957.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Youth Crew Program Coordinator
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary (6 months, beginning August 2008)
Employer: Student Conservation Association (SCA), reporting to SCA’s Oakland-based Regional High School Program Manager
Location: Richmond and Oakland, California
Hourly Pay: $19.28 - $21.93
Summary: Responsible for developing a new part-time youth crew program that will engage six high school age girls in community outreach, media arts, and education work at Rosie the Riveter / WWII Home Front National Historic Park (NHP) in Richmond, CA. The Coordinator will work closely with SCA and National Park Service staff, as well as with Red Oak Victory Ship volunteers, and with Richmond Youth Media. This person will also be responsible for helping identify future partner agencies and potential funders to keep the program going beyond its pilot year. The position is part-time, from August 2008 through January 2009.

Hours: Hours are somewhat flexible, ideally averaging 20-26 hours/week in August and September 2008, then going down to 10-12 hours/week from October 2008 to late January 2009 (with some time off in late December). Primarily weekday business hours, but with occasional weekend or evening activities.

Responsibilities:
• Meet and plan with various partner agencies to develop a nine-month schedule of work, educational and recreational activities, and related resources for the crew.
• Establish goals and outcomes for the youth crew, based on the needs of the Rosie the Riveter/WW II Home Front NHP and the stipulations of the grant that is funding this crew.
• Help identify, interview and select prospective crew members, in conjunction with Richmond Youth Media, Richmond YouthWORKS, and local schools and Career Academies.
• Serve as liaison between partner agencies and SCA. Communicate with SCA staff as needed.
• Prepare crew leader and crew member orientation for mid-September 2008.
• Help develop evaluation surveys for crew members and partner agencies.
• Meet with city officials, school principals, potential funders, and others in the community to promote the program and its longer-term sustainability.
• Serve as back up crew leader in case crew leader is indisposed while crew is in session. This may involve driving crew members, supervising them at the worksite, leading activities, etc.
• Follow all SCA policies and procedures as required for the position.

Qualifications:
• Previous experience in youth program development /management, preferably in an urban setting.
• Experience in managing and/or establishing partnerships between schools, nonprofits, foundations, and/or governmental agencies.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• College or graduate degree preferred. Must be at least 21 years old.
• Basic computer skills – using Word, Excel, and the internet – required.
• Knowledge of the Richmond community, schools and funders preferred.
• Previous experience with videography or filmmaking preferred but not required.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and must pass criminal/driving background check at SCA’s expense. Ability and willingness to drive a 7- or 10-passenger van.

Deliverables:
• Draft written crew schedule and program goals/outcomes in consultation with Program Manager and Park staff by 9/1/08.
• Have selected six eligible and motivated crew members hired by 9/15/08.
• Complete written crew leader and crew member orientation agendas by 9/15/08.
• Ensure that program-related supplies, resources, speakers, etc. are in place prior to daily crew activities.
• Provide contact list and correspondence log of Richmond-based city officials, existing and potential partner organizations, school principals and teachers, existing and potential funders, and other individuals who may contribute to the longer-term sustainability of this project –by 1/30/09,
• Create written post-project survey for partner agencies and crew members by 1/30/09.
