Part Time Environmental Education Program Presenter

Job Description
Part-time position, approximately 10-12 hours/week, Mondays and Wednesdays, giving “Watershed Adventures” presentations to fourth grade classes in west Alameda County. Conduct fast-paced, exciting classroom activities which help students learn how they can play a role in protecting creeks, watersheds and SF Bay from pollution. Must be comfortable speaking to and interacting with a class of 30 students, have an inspiring and positive attitude as an educator, and be able to coordinate effectively with classroom teachers. Coursework in environmental studies or natural sciences, and experience educating elementary school aged youth in a group setting are requirements for this position. A great entry-level environmental education job or paid internship for a college student. Complete training in program content and how to present the program’s fixed curriculum is provided. Please note: this position does not involve curriculum development.
Term of the position: To be filled immediately through mid May 2010.

Job Duties
ß Travel from your home directly to various Alameda County schools to conduct presentations in fourth grade classrooms. Presenters must arrive at schools on time, with all necessary program materials.
ß Use a variety of prepared educational materials to conduct lively and stimulating classroom activities in order to develop in students an awareness of, and sense of stewardship towards their local watersheds and San Francisco Bay.
ß Explain clearly and in age-appropriate language basic information about watersheds, the storm drain system, water pollution and local aquatic wildlife habitats.
ß Prepare and pack materials before the presentations and set-up and clean up materials for each classroom presentation. Assist with organizational tasks as needed.

Job Requirements
ß Understanding of environmental concepts related to watersheds, water pollution and conservation; college-level environmental studies/science courses preferred.
ß Experience teaching elementary school age children required; environmental ed is a plus.
ß Strong oral communication skills; able to give lively, fun and enthusiastic presentations. Energetic.
ß Excellent organizational skills; organized, neat, punctual, detail oriented, self-motivated.
ß Experience working as part of a team or group; good communication skills, flexible.
ß Able to lift equipment up to 50 lbs. Need secure space to store several boxes of supplies at home.
ß Must have reliable car (and space in car to transport bulky program materials, including a 2’ x 4’ x 2’ watershed model); auto insurance, valid CDL.
ß Able to start work early AM, navigate way to schools throughout western Alameda County; able to read and use street maps. Must reside in or very close to west Alameda County due to limited funds available for mileage reimbursement.
ß Must have computer with daily, reliable access to internet, and phone for program communications.
ß Presenters must be prepared to arrive at schools on time, with all necessary program materials.

Additional Information
Hiring timeframe: position posted 1/5/10, open until filled.
Compensation: $18 per hour, with potential to raise to $19/hour after 6 weeks, plus mileage reimbursement
Hours: Approx. 8 -12 hours per week; Mon. and Wed., must be available to work
between approximately 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM
Duration: ASAP through mid May 2010 (excluding school holiday and testing periods)
Hiring requirements: applicant provides copy of TB test, DMV printout, proof of insurance
