Restoration and Nursery Manager, Friends of Sausal Creek

The Friends of Sausal Creek (FOSC) in Oakland,
California, a 501(c)(3), is seeking a restoration program and nursery manager to support its field 
operations. FOSC is a community-based grassroots organization working to improve the Sausal Creek Watershed, with an ultimate vision of a healthy riparian corridor linking the hills and the bay.

Definition
The restoration program and nursery manager will be responsible for maintaining our ongoing
watershed restoration efforts and directing and managing the Joaquin Miller Native Plant Nursery
(JMNPN). The JMNPN is a volunteer-based nursery supporting the watershed restoration efforts of
FOSC. S/he coordinates with and reports to the executive director to achieve objectives and goals set
out by the board of directors. FOSC's restoration and nursery programs rely on volunteer labor, so
outreach to our volunteer base and coordination of volunteers is an essential part of the job. Nursery
management includes local native plant production, education, data recording, outreach, and facility
management and development, including development of planting plans and production schedules for
FOSC restoration projects and an annual native plant sale. The manager will supervise and train interns,
crew leaders, and volunteers, coordinate efforts with various project partners and volunteer restoration
site leaders, and lead environmental education field trips at restoration sites and at the nursery.
Schedule
Work schedule is typically Tuesday through Saturday with occasional evenings required.
Terms
This is a staff position. The rate of pay is $18-$22 per hour, depending on experience; the number of
hours required is 35 hours per week. The manager will be responsible for his/her own transportation,
including transporting tools and nursery plants to work sites. Workers' Compensation Insurance is
provided. After one year of employment, employee earns one week of paid personal time off each
year. After two years of employment, employee is eligible for a $200 per month stipend for health
insurance. 
General Characteristics and Required Skills
The qualified candidate must have adequate knowledge of the practice of ecological restoration, local
plant identification skills, local habitat types, watershed functions, basic horticultural practices, and
environmental education. A degree in a related field of study or two years work experience in the
field is required. S/he must enjoy working with people in the field, be flexible and adaptive as needs
arise in regard to grant obligations, and should have experience coordinating groups of volunteers of
various ages, ethnicities, and numbers. Position requires some heavy lifting, hiking on rough terrain,
and long days in the field. Experience leading citizen science programs and experience with
vegetation monitoring practices a plus. The successful candidate will be able to:
Plan and implement field projects and events
Prioritize restoration needs throughout various restoration project sites
Develop and follow work and production plans and timelines
Plan for and work with volunteers to produce plants for restoration efforts and an annual plant sale
Manage and maintain nursery structures and irrigation
Manage and maintain a healthy plant crop

Work independently and also accept feedback from executive director, board members, volunteers, peers, 
and the Restoration and Nursery Committees
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Conduct outreach to established volunteer groups
Facilitate groups of volunteers
Facilitate the Restoration and Nursery Committees
Nurture relationships with local municipalities, park stewards, neighborhood associations, and other groups concerned with water quality improvement and habitat restoration
Engage in computer work; have a good working knowledge of word processing, database, and spreadsheet software
Direction Received
The manager receives guidance and direction from the FOSC board of directors and the executive
director. Because there is no centralized office, it is essential that the manager have the experience
and motivation to work independently with minimal
day-to-day supervision while keeping interested
parties informed.
