Farm Manager
Job Description

People’s Grocery is seeking a new Farm Manager to be trained under the existing Farm Manager to take over all food production on our two acre farm located in Sunol, CA. Prospective candidates will undergo a 26 week apprenticeship program whereby he or she will work directly with and report directly to the current Farm Manager. Upon successful completion of the 26 week period successful candidate will take over the Farm Manager’s role and report to Director of Programs. The qualified candidate would have some agricultural experience but, more importantly, will have a willingness to learn all aspects of an organic farming system, a strong work ethic, a willingness to work long hours in a variety of weather conditions, a great love for the outdoors, a desire to get very dirty on a daily basis, a strong affinity for working with others and interpersonal skills for managing small and large groups. Lastly, and most importantly, the ideal candidate understands the crisis the West Oakland community is currently facing in regards to access to fresh produce and recognizes that by controlling the means to grow large amounts of produce People’s Grocery can make significant steps towards alleviating part of this problem.

Responsibilities:
All aspects of farm planning and labor including:
· crop planning
· seed ordering
· crop rotation
· seeding, planting
· transplanting
· cultivation
· irrigation
· soil fertility maintenance
· coordination with greenhouse manager
· harvesting and storing
· food distribution
· basic tool maintenance and storage
· all farm related composting activities including sourcing and storing compost
· assuring that all procedures are safe to all involved

Additional responsibilities include supervising farm staff, including youth interns, and organizing weekly farm and volunteer work activities including, but not limited to, harvesting, harvest sequencing, processing, planting, and weeding.

Farm Manager is also responsible for organizing large group volunteer work hours and work functions including large manual labor tasks. At times the Farm Manager is responsible for hosting and providing education to visiting groups.

The Farm Manager is responsible for keeping complete clear and concise logs of all of the above activities as needed for tracking PG farm activities as well as CCOF/Organic Certification.

Farm Manger is responsible to attend all People’s Grocery staff meetings and some special events when requested.

Qualifications
· Experience working in West Oakland or a low-income community of color
· Farm/garden/agricultural experience is preferred but not required
· Excellent organizational and planning skills; team player and a self starter
· Bilingual or bicultural skills desirable, but not required
· Ability to work well with diverse groups, sensitivity to issues of race, class, and gender within the workplace and in the community at large
· Candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs, walk up stairs, and work under difficult environmental conditions including excessive heat, moisture, and cold temperatures
· Valid California Drivers License

COMPENSATION
Starting wage is 15$ an hour for 30 hours per week. Apprentice training will be for 26weeks. Upon completion of 26 week training potential employee will be increased to full time work, with benefits and salary increase to be determined.
