Sunset Neighborhood Coordinator (sunset / parkside)Reply to: Suzanne@fuf.netDate: 2008-08-13, 11:06AM PDTFriends of the Urban Forest (FUF) is seeking a Neighborhood Coordinator for the Sunset district. This part-time, temporary position will facilitate communication between FUF, neighbors and community groups in the Sunset to promote and execute a neighborhood tree planting in the Sunset. Through our grassroots, community-led model FUF has planted over 42,000 trees in San Francisco since 1981. Friends of the Urban Forest recognizes that the Sunset neighborhood suffers from a lack of green spaces, tree coverage and community engagement. But many residents in the Sunset have asked that more trees be planted in their heavily concreted section of the city. We have held four community plantings in the Sunset so far in 2008, planting over 172 new street trees with the help of hundreds of residents and volunteers. FUF has received funding and support from two national partners with which to offer FREE trees to residents in the Sunset. We plan to hold a large community planting on Saturday, October 18th, accommodating at least 400 volunteers and planting at least 100 street trees. Fluency in written and spoken Chinese required Your tasks are: � Outreach to residents in the Sunset to invite them to plant more street trees with FUF � Inform and engage the residents in the Sunset (19th Avenue to the Ocean) by holding a kick-off meeting in August and a pre-planting meeting in September � Help build community by collaborating with local community groups to help promote the project and attract planters and volunteers � Assist the Community Outreach Manger & the Planting Managers with the management of planting day and logistics leading up to the event Responsibilities include: � Contacting neighborhood organizations, community groups and politicians to communicate FUF tree planting goals and help them to promote the upcoming planting � Sharing FUF information and benefits of trees with interested neighbors through email and phone � Representing FUF at community events to share information about our programs and gain support for the Sunset planting � Oversee promotional materials: flyers, ads, web updates � Collecting tree planting application forms from 100+ residents! Qualifications: � Fluency in written and spoken Chinese required � Strong communication skills, including public speaking and one-on-one interactions � Good organizational skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility and creativity � Interest in urban social and environmental issues and concerns � A high level of organization and prompt responsiveness � Experience with computers including Microsoft Office and email � Understanding and appreciation of different cultures, peoples and communications styles and methods is highly useful This is a part time contract position requiring 8 to 12 hrs per week now through October 30.
