Worksafe is a California-based organization dedicated to eliminating workplace hazards. We advocate for protective worker health and safety laws and effective remedies for injured workers. We watchdog government agencies to ensure they enforce these laws. We engage in campaigns in coalition with unions, workers, community, environmental and legal organizations, and scientists to eliminate hazards and toxic chemicals from the workplace.
General Description of Position: The Occupational Safety and Health Advocate will assist with Worksafe’s policy and advocacy work on occupational health and chemical policy, including media and communications activities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead role in coordinating work to promote safer chemicals policies, from environmental “green chemistry” laws and regulations to protective workplace exposure limits through new Cal/OSHA regulations
- Promote Worksafe’s legislative and regulatory agenda
- Develop and maintain media relations and respond to press inquiries; engage editorial boards, draft letters to the editor and press releases
- Research and develop fact sheets, comment on proposed laws and regulations; write and deliver testimony
- Assist in identifying and pursuing fundraising opportunities to expand our work in these areas
Qualifications:
- M.P.H. or J.D. or equivalent experience preferred, expertise in occupational or related public health area preferred
- Excellent analytical skills, political judgment, and oral and written communication skills
- A t least three years demonstrated success in progressive political advocacy campaigns and/or union/worker center organizing
- Strong media skills, including working with traditional and new media outlets
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with ability to translate scientific and technical legal or regulatory issues for policy makers and the general public
- Experience in developing and implementing campaign plans
- Experience in coalition building
- Ability to relate to and inspire people in a variety of stakeholder communities
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently, with energy and enthusiasm
- Spanish or other bi-lingual skills a plus
Salary and Benefits: Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time exempt position with benefits, including medical benefits, retirement benefits and generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave.
