Job Description: Data Analyst for Health Impact Assessment Research 

Summary
The San Francisco Public Health Foundation is recruiting a research analyst to support the San Francisco
Department of Public Health for a five month period (ending August 31, 2013) to support data
collection, analysis, and visualization used in health impact assessment (HIA) to inform public policy on
housing and neighborhood conditions that impact health.  

Position Background and Description
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is a national leader in the use of health
data to inform public policy. SFDPH has an active HIA practice, which includes HIA methods 
development, training, and scholarship and 20 HIA applications in diverse policy sectors including
land use, housing, transportation, and labor. Information about SFDPH’s current and past
activities are available at: www.sfphes.org and www.hiacollaborative.org
. In 2011, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention’s Healthy Community Design Initiative awarded SFDPH
funding to support HIA applications, training and dissemination.

Duties and Responsibilities include: 
• Collect  and organize data from government and private sources for health and
sustainability performance metrics; 
• Conduct literature reviews and summarize key findings on specific topics as needed;
• Analyze and map data to create publication-ready charts, tables, and maps for the 
projects.

Required Experience: 
• Experience with data management and collection
• Experience with Geographic Information Systems
• Experience with quantitative or statistical data analysis
• Experience with effective data visualization
• Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Public 
Health, Environmental Planning or Policy, Planning or a closely related field and two (2)
years of professional level experience; OR Possession of a master’s degree from an
accredited college or university or currently enrolled in Public Health, Public Health 
Administration, Environmental Planning or Policy, Planning or a closely related field.

Desired skills also include: 
• Understanding of social determinants of health and health/social/environmental impact
assessments 
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines
• Ability to work independently toward excellent work outcomes
• Ability to create and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders 

Job Status 
Temporary, Full-time (40 hours per week) opportunity for five (5) months

Pay  
Salary based on skills and experience 
Salary Range: $60,320 - 68,640/annual rate; $29 - 33/hr.

impactful “storytelling" and visualizations that can be used to support future health impact assessment
(HIA) and policy recommendations on healthy housing and/or other key healthy community design
initiatives. 

Position Background and Description

support HIA and healthy public policy messages and communications; 
• Advise on the communications language for HIA findings and recommendations;
• Support SFDPH staff to produce high quality products in a range of media that effectively 
communicate health messages and HIA recommendations.

Required Experience: 
• Demonstrated expertise in communications, public affairs and media as well as strong
story development, writing and editorial skills. 
• Experience with data visualization, graphic and social media tools
• Strong copy writing skills for web and social media
• Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in 
Communication, Public Relations, Journalism or a closely related field and two (2) years 
of professional level experience; OR Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited
college or university or currently enrolled in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism
or a closely related field.
