Build It Green is seeking a Government Relations Manager to manage and
expand participation in Build It Green's Public Agency Councils and
support local government programs and policies through comprehensive
training and education.

Key responsibilities include:

* Creation of a public agency outreach plan to actively engage
public agencies as green building change agents, including a visible
Build It Green presence at League of California Cities events, outreach
to regional Councils of Governments, Mayors' Councils, and Metropolitan
Planning Organizations, and direct contact with individual agencies and

* Management of Build It Green's Public Agency Council chapters

checkers, building inspectors, and resource specialists (e.g., energy,
water, stormwater, recycling).

* Coordinate with other program managers to facilitate public
agency participation and support for GreenPoint Rated, Green Home Tours,
professional trainings, and other Build It Green programs.

Background
Californians for Solar and Clean Energy is a campaign coalition of climate scientists, economists,
consumers, public health and environmental organizations and business leaders working to
pass the Solar and Clean Energy Act(SACE).A California statewide ballot proposition that will
appear on the November 2008 General Election ballot.
The Solar and Clean Energy Act will advance solar and clean energy production in California’s
vast desert lands. The Act requires that by 2025 at least 50% of the electricity used in California
comes from solar and clean energy. The ballot proposition will create thousands of jobs in
California, boost our energy independence, help stop global warming pollution, and curb the
building of coal and dirty energy power plants.
Job Description
Californians for Solar and Clean Energy is currently seeking to hire experienced grassroots field
organizers who will utilize a combination of traditional organizing tactics and innovative new
organizing tools to carry out the campaign’s voter education program. Positions are from July
2008 to November 15th 2008.
Field staff will focus their efforts on volunteer recruitment, voter education, Get‐Out –the‐Vote
activities and coordination of community events and public activities. A field organizer will be
expected to:
• Recruit, train, mobilize and manage volunteers.
• Successfully carry out a house meeting program, phone banking and precinct walking
activities.
• Develop and implement local media campaigns
• Train volunteers to carry out the Californian’s for Solar and Clean Energy house meeting
program and voter education program
• Build coalitions and networks with community leaders, elected officials, organizations,
etc .., in their community
• Organize, manage and coordinate media events, rallies, town halls and other public
events.
Qualifications
Candidates interested in this position must have the desire, skills and determination to work in
an exciting, fast paced and demanding organization. Candidates must be extremely flexible and
organized, willing to accommodate sudden changes in strategy and tasks, work weekends and
long hours, travel and/or be willing to relocate for the duration of the campaign.
Candidates must be goal‐oriented, possess leadership skills, enjoy working in groups and in a
collaborative environment, be able to recruit and motivate a wide range of people and have a
strong commitment to protecting the environment and fighting global climate change.
Strong communication skills and proficiency with the internet and computers are required.
All applicants must possess a valid drivers license and auto insurance.
At least two year s of organizing experience is preferred but not required.
College education preferred but not required

San Joaquin Regional Education Coordinator Position Available with the
Center for Land-Based Learning

This full time position offers an opportunity to be a leader in the Central
Valley and help valley teens learn about their valley-- its assets and its
challenges. The Coordinator heads up two hands-on learning programs and
partners with various agencies, and restoration companies and landowners in
bringing yearlong placed-based environmental restoration projects to valley
high school classes. Local farms and ranches become outdoor classrooms
where students learn first hand about the challenges and joys of
agriculture as all strive towards sustainability.

The successful applicant will be able to work independently and be a
self-starter who can coordinate, organize, build and maintain healthy
relationships, write grants and lead project teams at field days throughout
the school year. Outreach to the greater San Joaquin county community will
also be part of the responsibilities. Experience in coordinating programs
and volunteers as well as working with youth is desirable. Knowledge and
understanding of the Central Valley and current issues as well as either a
teaching or science background working with youth will also be of value.

The California Native Plant Society is seeking applicants for up to 12 Botanist/Ecologist positions for field work in the spring/summer 2008. At least three of these positions may extend into April 2009. Successful candidates will participate in vegetation inventory and mapping projects in collaboration with the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG). Candidates will be hired as either a Team Leader or a Field Assistant, depending on qualifications and experience. They will be hired to work either out of the main office in Sacramento or the satellite office in Fresno. Employees will be expected to live within commuting distance of their office though they will participate in 3-5 day sampling missions, usually camping overnight.
The principal focus of this work will support a vegetation mapping and classification project in the Sierra Nevada Foothills and the San Joaquin Valley ecosystems of California. As defined here, this includes the foothills above the Central Valley to around 1200 m in elevation, as well as the Carrizo Plain, Temblor Range, Elk Hills, and the San Joaquin Valley south of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in plant ecology, landscape ecology, botany, geography, and conservation in California.
The CNPS seasonal botany/ecology positions offer experience in the collection of field survey data using standardized CNPS vegetation protocols. CNPS maintains a uniform system for vegetation sampling, vegetation classification and mapping, and plant information databases. Developed over the past 15 years by CNPS, these systems are used by both government and non-government institutions. Physical job requirements include sitting, driving, carrying, lifting, standing, and hiking. The position requires the ability to work long field days under rigorous conditions (including inclement conditions), to hike in rugged terrain, and to lift/carry equipment that is up to 1/3 of your body weight.
Qualifications for the successful applicant include the following:
. Basic knowledge of plant taxonomy and vegetation sampling techniques.
. Identification of plants to the species level, with a focus on the identification of California’s Central Valley
and Sierra Nevada Flora.
. Proven ability to conduct fieldwork in varied environmental conditions, including inclement weather and
poison oak.
. Good organizational skills, enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
. Undergraduate degree in biology, botany, or a related field - OR - work towards an undergraduate
degree with completed courses including plant taxonomy, field botany, sampling design, or related
courses.
. Ability to take direction and to work well in a team setting.
. Ability to drive 4X4 vehicles over variable terrain.
. A valid driver’s license, proof of current car insurance, and a safe driving record are required.
Additional experience / skills for Team Leaders:
. Strong background in California plant identification and experience conducting vegetation sampling.
. Ability to lead field assistants and ensure safe working environment while navigating in variable terrain.
. Ability to coordinate daily field tasks.
. Manage data for field team, ensuring data are recorded and entered accurately, consistently, and
efficiently.
. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
. Experience using GPS (Global Positioning System) units and other plant survey equipment (e.g., tape
measure, compass).
. Experience with databases and/or spreadsheets.
The salary is offered at $13.50 to $16.70 per hour, commensurate with experience. These are full-time, temporary field positions, beginning in May 2008 and extending through August 2008. Additional work is available for some Team Leaders from September 2008 to April 2009, in the field and office. Extended employment may be possible through future grants/contracts.

Research Assistant


The Pacific Institute is seeking a part-time summer research assistant for the Community Strategies for Sustainability and Justice (CSSJ) Program. Founded in 1987 and based in Oakland, California, the Institute works to develop solutions to the related problems of environmental protection, economic development, and human health from the local to the international level. The CSSJ program was launched in 1995 to assist communities in addressing critical human health and environmental issues. Our program work includes community based participatory action research, technical and policy analysis, community education, and leadership development.

Position Description
The Institute is seeking a part-time research assistant (RA) who can conduct research and writing for the West Contra Costa County Neighborhood Indicators Project (WCIP), a community-driven action research process focused on environmental, economic, and community health issues. These issues include: youth programs, public lighting, city parks, illegal dumping, lead poisoning, liquor store concentrations, and oral histories of community leaders.



We seek an energetic, organized and confident person with strong research and analytical abilities, writing skills, and motivation. Graduate students are encouraged to apply. Specific responsibilities include:



Identifying, contacting, and receiving neighborhood-level data from various data sources;
Coordinating neighborhood-level data sharing with research partners;
Formatting data for statistical and geographic analysis;
Analyzing and presenting data to community partners;
Completing literature reviews and other background research on each issue;
Writing draft chapters for the final indicators report and related fact sheets and media outreach materials, integrating data and background research with community-developed solutions.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and educational or experiential background in urban planning, sociology, public health, environmental health, geography, environmental science, or related field;
Excellent research skills;
Strong writing skills with the ability to write about technical material for a community audience;
Ability to verbally communicate, technical, scientific, or policy information to a lay audience;
A working understanding of and commitment to environmental, economic, and other social justice movements;
Demonstrated ability to work with a people from diverse backgrounds;
Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and a true enjoyment of managing multiple tasks at once;
Excellent computer skills, including fluency with Word, Excel, and the Internet;
Experience with community-based participatory research or participatory action research a plus.


Time and Compensation
The research assistant will work between 10 and 20 hours a week. Compensation is on an hourly basis and is competitive, commensurate with experience.

Summary:

Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) is seeking an Education Assistant. Candidate will work directly with FUF’s Education Manager, who runs the Youth Tree Care Program, which consists of a crew of 24 at-risk youth, 14-18 years old. This is a six week long paid environmental and employment summer program for youth. Primary responsibilities will include tree care, tree planting, gardening, educational field trips, along with some career development and administrative work. This is a full-time, temporary position, duration specific (see below).

Work Schedule:

• Start date is June 9, 2008 and the end date is August 15, 2008. It is very important that you be able to commit to working these dates.
• 40 hours a week
• Some Saturdays required
• A camping trip at Rob Hill Campground, Presidio, San Francisco, from July 9th – 11th, 3 days and 2 nights

Required Skills:

• ISA Certified Arborist (or the equivalent) preferred but not required
• College degree or in college
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

TDA, an award-winning Oakland firm, is looking for a lead project manager
with a minimum of 3-5 years experience in wood frame and concrete design and
construction of multi-family housing and mixed use development; an
architectural license is not required but would be considered a plus.

As a potential member of TDA¹s staff, you:

important. All of our projects are urban infill, and as Charter Members of
the Congress for the New Urbanism, this is an intentional commitment. TDA
designed the first new construction live/work projects ever built in the
United States. Thomas Dolan consults and writes codes for live/work in
cities all over North America, and is presently writing a book on the
subject, with a foreward by CNU founder Andres Duany.

We are an all-Macintosh office and we do our primary drafting in
Vectorworks, increasingly augmented by 3D design work in Sketchup. We offer
flexible hours and are open to partial telecommuting as appropriate to the
current job situation. TDA is located West of Jack London Square, and is a
thirteen minute walk from BART.
