Field Organizer Job Description
Background
Californians for Solar and Clean Energy is a campaign coalition of climate scientists, economists,
consumers, public health and environmental organizations and business leaders working to
pass the Solar and Clean Energy Act(SACE).A California statewide ballot proposition that will
appear on the November 2008 General Election ballot.
The Solar and Clean Energy Act will advance solar and clean energy production in California’s
vast desert lands. The Act requires that by 2025 at least 50% of the electricity used in California
comes from solar and clean energy. The ballot proposition will create thousands of jobs in
California, boost our energy independence, help stop global warming pollution, and curb the
building of coal and dirty energy power plants.
Job Description
Californians for Solar and Clean Energy is currently seeking to hire experienced grassroots field
organizers who will utilize a combination of traditional organizing tactics and innovative new
organizing tools to carry out the campaign’s voter education program. Positions are from July
2008 to November 15th 2008.
Field staff will focus their efforts on volunteer recruitment, voter education, Get‐Out –the‐Vote
activities and coordination of community events and public activities. A field organizer will be
expected to:
• Recruit, train, mobilize and manage volunteers.
• Successfully carry out a house meeting program, phone banking and precinct walking
activities.
• Develop and implement local media campaigns
• Train volunteers to carry out the Californian’s for Solar and Clean Energy house meeting
program and voter education program
• Build coalitions and networks with community leaders, elected officials, organizations,
etc .., in their community
• Organize, manage and coordinate media events, rallies, town halls and other public
events.
Qualifications
Candidates interested in this position must have the desire, skills and determination to work in
an exciting, fast paced and demanding organization. Candidates must be extremely flexible and
organized, willing to accommodate sudden changes in strategy and tasks, work weekends and
long hours, travel and/or be willing to relocate for the duration of the campaign.
Candidates must be goal‐oriented, possess leadership skills, enjoy working in groups and in a
collaborative environment, be able to recruit and motivate a wide range of people and have a
strong commitment to protecting the environment and fighting global climate change.
Strong communication skills and proficiency with the internet and computers are required.
All applicants must possess a valid drivers license and auto insurance.
At least two year s of organizing experience is preferred but not required.
College education preferred but not required
Other Qualifications:
• Ability to recruit and mobilize volunteers
• Experience coordinating phone banks, precinct walks and GOTV activities (preferred)
• Experience with MS Word and Excel
• Self‐Motivated
• Able to work independently
• Patience, persistence and flexibility
• Ability and willingness to work long hours in stressful situations
• Ability to take direction from supervisors
• Ability to work in and with diverse communities
Salary & Benefits
Salary ranges from $3,000 to $3,500 per month. This is an independent contractor position.
