Creek Volunteer Opportunities

This coming Saturday, Feb. 21, 10 am – 1 pm, join the Urban Creeks Council weeding and planting natives along Rheem Creek at Contra Costa College. You’ll also learn sheet mulching – an effective and environmentally friendly way to control weeds. Meet in fron of the student-services building, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, San Pablo. Information at doria-at-urbancreeks.org or 510-540-6669. (RSVP for groups of 10 or more.)

On Saturday’ Feb. 28, 10 am – 12:30 pm, Friends of Five Creeks volunteers will head a bit north to restored Baxter Creek at the north end of the Ohlone Greenway. This is a beautiful site that needs a little TLC; we’ll have snacks, water, tools, gloves, and light and heavy tasks for all. The location, Conlon between San Pablo and Key, is a great bike ride on the Ohlone Greenway, a short walk north from El Cerrito del Norte BART, or easily reached by the frequent AC Transit 72 bus on San Pablo. Information on our web site, www.fivecreeks.org.

Saturday, Feb. 28, 10 am - 2 pm, join Greens at Work removing invasives along the Bay Trail on Pt. Isabel. From Central Avenue west of the I-580 Freeway, turn right on Rydin Road, which ends at the dog park. Follow the Bay Trail north until you find folks working. Bring water, sunscreen, and hat. Be sure to RSVP at kyotousa@sbcglobal.net – they need to know whether the group size means they need a green-waste container!

Every Saturday through the rainy season, SPAWN (The Salmon Protection and Watershed Network) is hosting restoration efforts in the Lagunitas Watershed. The endangered coho need all the help they can get! Hours are 10 am – 1 pm at varied locations in the beautiful San Geronimo Valley, West Marin – email blaine@tirn.net or call (415) 663-8590 x118 for location or check on Fridays at www.spawnusa.org/upcomingevents/number-5.

Friday, March 13: Here’s a new opportunity -- let off steam after a week’s work by bashing the ivy along Strawberry Creek at at UC Berkeley’s Grinnell Natural Area, 4 pm second Fridays (March 13, April 10, and May 8). Maybe go for a beer afterwards? Meet at the bike path bridge just west of Life Sciences Building, UC Berkeley campus near Oxford Street. For information contact tpine@berkeley.edu.
